Mordechai Brafman is in jail now seeking psychological counselling and is cooperating with police, his lawyer says, after the hapless terrorist shot two men he thought were Palestinians but who were really two Israelis on holiday in Miami, USA.
Brafman’s attorney said his terrorist client had been suffering from a “severe mental health crisis” that caused him to “fear for his life”, impairing “his ability to make sound judgments” and so he just shot at the terrified pair 17 times in terror.
Turns out neither was seriously injured. One of the men, Ari Revay, even called up a local radio station and described the incident. He said he and his father had been driving in their car when Brafman, whom they did not know, drove by in his truck.
Without warning, he started firing wildly at the hapless pair but only managed to slightly injure the two, despite his enthusiasm.
Brafman later told police: “While I was driving my truck, I saw two Palestinians and shot and killed both.”
The mainstream media have largely ignored Brafman’s blaps, but that silence has been noted on social media .
Revay took to social media, trying to spin his ordeal at the hands of a racist Zionist as an act of antisemitism, writing: “My father and I went through a murder attempt against anti-semitic background.” Unsurprisingly, he signed off with the words, “Death to Arabs.”
The attack started a widespread debate online about growing anti-Arab sentiment in the US, which many social media users believe has been fuelled by “anti-Palestinian hate and indoctrination” within pro-Israeli communities in the US.
One user said: “If a Muslim shot two people in Miami because he thought they were Israelis, it would be called terrorism and there would be wall-to-wall media coverage,” criticising the lack of coverage of the incident within mainstream news outlets.
Advocacy groups are warning incidents of anti-Muslim hate have surged in the US since the start of the Gaza genocide.
On October 14, 2023 six year-old Palestinian Wadea al-Fayoume was killed by his family’s landlord who stabbed him 26 times, in suburban Chicago.
In November 2023, a 41-year-old woman allegedly attempted to drown a three-year-old Palestinian-American girl in Texas, while three young Palestinian men were injured after they were shot near a university campus in Vermont.
Xers criticised the way mainstream media had reported the incident, observing that the term “terrorism” has not been uttered by press reports
The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (Cair) has called for federal hate crime charges to be brought against Brafman.
“We urge state and federal law enforcement authorities to bring hate crime charges in this case based on the alleged perpetrator’s statements to police that reportedly indicate an anti-Palestinian motive,” Cair’s Wilfredo Amr Ruiz, said.
A 2024 report by Cair says there has been an unprecedented rise in Islamophobic incidents throughout 2023 and 2024, with 8,061 complaints of anti-Muslim discrimination nationwide in 2024 alone.
