Kamal Adwan Hospital is silent Monday, its darkened operating theatres empty, life-saving equipment damaged and the floors littered with the detritus of Israel’s final, fatal weekend raid that shut down the hospital and “disappeared” its health personnel and patients after assaulting them and forcing them to strip down to their underpants.
Dr Hussam Abu Safiya, the hospitals valiant director, was beaten and forced with his staff out of the hospital at gunpoint before being transferred to an unknown location. Constant bombing set the facility on fire with doctors and patients inside, killing several, health officials said.
The Gaza media office says there were 350 people in the hospital, including 180 medical workers and 75 patients.
The Lawnmowers started attacking the hospital at sunrise, with operating rooms, laboratories and other emergency departments targeted by strikes and set ablaze, Middle East Eye reports.
Islam Ahmad, an eyewitness to the attack, said fears were growing for the safety of the medics, especially Abu Safiya who had kept up social media appeals to the international community to help the hospital, its staff and patients. However, his appeals fell on dead ears.
America and its allies have made it clear – Israel is a “special ally” who will be allowed to do whatever, whenever it likes, irrespective of the legal consequences, be it genocide or a nuclear holocaust.
On Friday morning, that carte blanche saw Israel’s stormtroopers marching into hospital wards and switching off oxygen supplies and forcing medics and patients out into the freezing streets. Temperatures have plummeted in recent days with at least four infants freezing to death due to Israel’s heartless blockade of food, water and winter essentials.
Social media showed an Israeli quadcopter dropping explosives on a section of the hospital whilst crises for help rang out.
The final assault followed a suffocating siege of the hospital, in the same manner Israel has executed several hospitals during its US-controlled genocide.
The other two hospitals in northern Gaza, the Indonesian Hospital and al-Awda hospital, ceased operations several weeks ago under relentless Israeli attacks.
Kamal Adwan remained operational at minimal capacity, offering life-saving services to newborn infants in neonatal intensive care units and other patients in ICUs.
It is clear and open genocide, being conducted hideously in plain sight, with gloating soldiers sharing their atrocities on social media, knowing they enjoy wall-to-wall American immunity.
“The General’s Plan” has been executed as intended. America claims only 10 000 to 15 000 of the original 70 000 civilians remain in northern Gaza that the Lawnmowers turned into an open kill zone, believing killing everything would eventually force Hamas to surrender.
Rockets fired from Gaza at Ashkelon and Tel Aviv at the weekend underlined the Lawnmowers have not succeeded.
Middle East Eye reports Over the past three months, Abu Safiya, a paediatrician, published dozens of videos and sent out pleas to the international community to act against the Israeli attacks.
He repeatedly warned the lives of patients and medical staff were in danger amid constant Israeli bombings and siege .
“Instead of receiving aid, we receive tanks… which are shelling the [hospital] building,” said Abu Safiya in a video two months ago.
In late October, Abu Safiya’s son died as a result of an earlier Israeli raid on the hospital. A month later, he was wounded in an Israeli air strike on the hospital complex.
Meanwhile, the fate of other medical staff and civilians kidnapped from the hospital on Saturday remains unknown.
The Gaza Health Ministry said it had lost contact with 10 of its medical staff members.
