Israel’s right-wing politicians are foaming at the mouth Monday over reports prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed to a ceasefire in Lebanon after US special envoy Amos Hochstein Sunday threatened to pull out of talks if he rejected the deal.
The genocidal state’s media are reporting an agreement to end the war could be achieved within days.
Green light is ‘on’
KAN Channel 14, Yedioth Ahronoth and other Hebrew outlets say the green light is “on” for an agreement with Lebanon.
The Cradle reports Netanyahu is discussing with senior officials how to present the agreement, cobbled together by America, to the public. It seems they’re trying to jockey up the stakes by presenting it as an Israeli idea while threatening Lebanon with attacks on Lebanese, not just Hezbollah, targets if Beirut refuses the deal.
“So far, Israel has not attacked Lebanese targets and has been careful to distinguish between targets belonging to Hezbollah and targets belonging to the Lebanese state,” an Israeli official explained to KAN.
The Saudi Al-Hadath channel cited an Israeli source as saying Netanyahu has agreed to the US ceasefire proposal, but needed cabinet approval.
The deal seems to be moving ahead, despite several issues remaining unresolved. These include Israel’s demand to be allowed to police the contested border area as well as keeping “freedom of the skies” to bomb Lebanon anywhere it likes.
The negotiations are seeking to implement UN Resolution 1701, which requires Hezbollah’s withdrawal beyond the Litani River and a complete withdrawal of invading Israeli forces from Lebanon.
Mutual right to ‘self-defence’
Beirut has reportedly agreed to an international committee to oversee the resolution’s implementation. A clause that asserted Israel’s right to operate militarily in Lebanon if the resolution failed was reportedly changed to accommodate both parties’ right to self-defense.
Hezbollah and the Lebanese government have vowed not to accept any agreement that violates Lebanon’s sovereignty.
Underlining its determination, Hezbollah Sunday targeted Israel with a massive salvo of at least 340 rockets, Middle East Eye reports Monday.
“The US reportedly agreed to give Israel a letter of assurances that includes ‘support for Israeli military action against imminent threats from Lebanese territory, and for action to disrupt things like the re-establishment of a Hezbollah military presence near the border or the smuggling of heavy weapons’, Middle East Eye reports.
It says Israel will take such actions after consultations with the US, and if the Lebanese army has not dealt with the issue first.
Israel’s new security minister Itamar Ben Gvir called the nascent deal a “grave mistake” and demanded in true, Hitlerian style a continuation of Israel’s illegal wars until “final victory”.
“Precisely now, when Hezbollah is beaten and longs for a cease-fire, it is forbidden to stop. As I warned before in Gaza, I warn now as well: Mr. Prime Minister – it is not too late to stop this agreement! We must continue until the absolute victory!” he whined on X.
