Macron sees the light, demands weapons ban and ceasefire in Gaza

Muhammad Amin

It has taken French president Emmanuel Macron a year to face the fact the only way to end Israel’s genocide in Gaza is to cut the flow of weapons and ammunition to the Nazi state.

He told Foreign Policy in Focus this week that “the priority is that we return to a political solution, that we stop delivering weapons to fight in Gaza.”

In a side swipe at the White House, he added: “If you call for a ceasefire, it’s only consistent that you do not supply weapons of war.”

France has suspended all offensive weapon sales to Israel and has prohibited Israeli companies from participating in arms exhibitions and trade shows.

Macron’s comments seem to be following a shift in Europe’s stance, challenging long-standing backing for Israeli actions.

For instance, Germany still routinely says Israel has the right to defend itself and that it supports it fully, but its arms sales have also fallen off a cliff since the beginning of the year. However, Macron seems to be leading the charge to ban all weapon sales while calling for a ceasefire.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Macron’s comments a “disgrace” and vowed the occupation would continue its slaughter with or without French help.

FPIF reports Macron’s genocide reluctance reflects a growing realization among European leaders that “Israel’s” behavior has surpassed “lawful self-defense” and into “excessive, unchecked aggression.”

His bluntness, late though it is, might prompt other leades, particularly those in the United States and Germany, to reassess their role in feeding the Gaza bloodshed.

Enormous pro-Palestinian rallies continue shaking Europe’s capitals, demonstrating growing public dissatisfaction with Netanyahu’s expansionist approach to genocide. Now that he is rolling out the same warfare against Lebanon’s civilians is hardening opposition to Tel Aviv.
