Families in shock after murdered women ‘fed to pigs’

Police have arrested a Limpopo pig farmer, his farm supervisor and a worker after they allegedly shot dead two women scavenging for expired food and then threw their bodies to their ravenous swine.

Official accounts and eye witnesses said the pigs had already started feeding on the upper parts of one of the corpses by the time police arrived on the scene a few days later last week.

Families of the women – mother of four, Maria Makgato (47) and Kudyai Lucia Ndlovu (34), were still reeling in shock at the weekend over the incident.

It started the previous Saturday when the women, accompanied by Ndlovu’s unidentified husband allegedly went to the farm in the hope of scavenging expired yoghurt dumped on the farm by Clover, the dairy company owned by an Israeli firm Milco.

The farm owner, Zachariah Johannes Olivier, and his supervisor, Andrian Rudolph De Wet, shot at the group, killing the two women and wounding the husband, police say.

A farm employee, William Musora, arrived for work at the farm the next day and discovered the bodies. He reported his find to his bosses and the three then dumped the bodies among the pigs, police allege.

The three accused men are charged with two counts premeditated murder, one count of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, defeating the ends of justice.

Musora is also charged with being in South Africa illegally, Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, Limpopo spokesman for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), said.

“It is alleged that on August 17, 2024, at a farm Onvervaght under Sebayeng policing area, after a Clover truck had dumped alleged expired or soon to expired goods, the two deceased and a surviving victim trespassed into the farm to collect the above goods,” said Malabi-Dzhangi.

Prosecutors claim Olivier and De Wet had previously planned to shoot any member of the community who trespassed onto the farm.

“The accused proceeded to fire several shots at the members of community killing two women and wounding the surviving male witness. The witness then crawled to the main road, received assistance and was then transported to the hospital,” Malabi-Dzhangi said.

“The following day, accused number 3 (Musora) who is an employee at the farm arrived at the farm and discovered the bodies of the deceased. He proceeded to report his discovery to accused one (Olivier) and accused two (De Wet).”

The trio then allegedly removed the two deceased bodies from where they had fallen and dumped them into nearby pig stalls.

“The pigs the started consuming one of the deceased’s body on the upper part. It is alleged that accused one (Olivier) cut the firearm used in the murder and disposed of it along the R80 road. The accused did not report the incident until the August 20 2024,” said Malabi-Dzhangi.

After receiving information about the incident, police swooped on the farm and arrested the three men last Wednesday.

The matter was postponed in court on Fridaz to August 30 for profiling , while the three accused remained in custody.

The farm is about 10km from the women’s homes in Sebayeng, outside Polokwane.

Makgato’s brother, Walter Mathole, told SABC News they became worried when the women didn’t return home last weekend, so they decided to go to the farm the next day to investigate.

“I went there and asked the workers if they had seen my sister, and they said they were absent from work on Monday. I asked the seller next door and he told me he heard gunshots last night.

“I asked the employer who fed the pigs if they did not see the dead bodies and he said no. Now I know they were lying because the pigs cannot go three days without being fed.”

Now, he says the family wants justice.

“We have lost, my sister’s children are now orphans, and I will have to now take care of them, I need help and I want those farm owners to be denied bail. I do not want to see them free.”
