Al-Tabin school massacre was ‘self-defence’ – Germany

Muhammad Amin

Germany remains locked in goosestep with Israel’s propaganda machine, insisting Israel’s horrific massacre of mainly children and the elderly at Gaza’s al-Tabin school last Saturday was “self-defence”.
“Israel has the right to defend itself,” government spokesman Wolfgang Buechner insisted this week when asked for Germany’s view of the weekend atrocity.
He then cranked up his response to full-Mossad mode: “The reality is that Hamas uses schools, hospitals, kindergartens as command centres and that the people in the Gaza Strip are also abused against their will as protective [human] shields,” Buechner added, and warned of “one-sided reports that are distributed by Hamas” and not “believing everything that is spread by this side”.
The strike targeted the Tabin school in Gaza City at dawn during Fajr salaah, with exploding shells ripping apart bodies, reducing many to unrecognisable mincemeat, so much so that rescuers had to estimate the number of dead by weighing body bags filled with mushy gore, instead of counting bodies or body parts.
The Tabin school, like over half of Gaza’s schools, was being used as a shelter for displaced people, many of them directed there from Beit Hanoun on orders by the Israeli wehrmacht. After the attack, the Israeli army said in a statement that it targeted a “command and control centre” that “served as a hideout for Hamas terrorists and commanders”, but did not provide any evidence to back up the claim.
But that was good enough for Berlin that ignored the natural revulsion expressed by the rest of the world excluding the US. UN data shows half of schools used as shelters in Gaza have been directly hit in the last 10 months. Satellite imagery has shown that 85 percent of school buildings (477 out of 564) were directly hit (344) or damaged (133).
Josep Borrell, EU foreign policy chief, said he was “horrified” by the attack: “At least 10 schools were targeted in the last weeks. There’s no justification for these massacres.”.
UK foreign minister David Lammy said he was “appalled” by the Israeli military strike and the “tragic loss of life”. France noted “for several weeks, school buildings have been repeatedly targeted, with an intolerable number of civilian victims. Israel must respect international humanitarian law.”
“Israel has committed a new crime against humanity by massacring more than a hundred civilians who had taken refuge in a school,” Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
US national security spokesperson Sean Savett released a statement saying he was “deeply concerned about reports of civilian casualties”, following the strike on the Tabin school.
None of their “shock”, “concern”, or “horror” resulted in any change of course. The massacres continue unchecked Thursday, even as negotiators arrive for ceasefire talks in Cairo.
We’re told Joe Biden is standing ready to publicly blame Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with a “he-made-me-do-it” call – presumably, a bid to leave Israel holding the body bag while he shuffles off stage.
Haaretz is warning Israelis Thursday this may be the real, first “chink of light” showing in a separation of US interests from Israel’s. The White House has sent out the message it will lay the blame at Netanyahu’s feet if the latest round of “ceasefire” talks fails.
