Police divers have recovered the body of Greenside High headboy Reza Saloojee after he went missing Sunday during a swim at the Vaal Dam.
Divers spent seven hours searching the water for the teen whose body was found just 100 metres from the spot where he went missing.
More than 20 police divers from Tshwane, Johannesburg and West Rand were at the dam to help colleagues in Sedibeng, who had been searching since Sunday.
His father, Bilal Saloojee, said his son went fishing with relatives on Sunday to take a break from his studies.
Reza dived into the water to save some of his belongings that a gust of wind had blown into the dam.
“He jumped into the water and swam. He battled to swim back as the tide was strong. He was last seen trying to swim back to shore. My son is a great swimmer,” Bilal added.
On Monday, during the search, Bilal said the family were in shock but still hopeful. “What happened was sudden. We are devastated. I hope we will find him soon.”
