“israel’s” shutdown of Al Jazeera after months of threats and intimidation is a “dark day for democracy”, the Foreign Press Association (FPA) said Sunday as it condemned the move.
The Zionists remained unabashed, maintaining pressure to the end with a police raid on the offices as its reports stepped out the doors for the last time.
The Qatar-based broadcaster was one of the last remaining international media networks reporting on Israel’s war on Gaza from the ground.
Al Jazeera called claims it was a threat to Israeli security a “dangerous and ridiculous lie”, adding it reserved the right to “pursue every legal step”.
The Zionists said communication equipment had been confiscated.
The shutdown has been condemned internationally.
“With this decision, Israel joins a dubious club of authoritarian governments to ban the station,” the FPA said.
“And the government may not be done. The prime minister has the authority to target other foreign media that he deems to be ‘acting against the state’.
“We urge the government to reverse this harmful step and uphold its commitment to freedom of the press – including outlets whose coverage it may not like.
“This is a dark day for the media. This is a dark day for democracy.”
The Committee to Protect Journalists’ (CPJ) Program Director Carlos Martinez de la Serna echoed the same concerns, saying: “The Israeli cabinet must allow Al Jazeera and all international media outlets to operate freely in Israel, especially during wartime.”
The UN’s Human Rights office also called the Israeli government to reverse the ban, posting on X: “A free & independent media is essential to ensuring transparency”.
